A Women’s Centre for Exeter
Why a Women’s Centre for Exeter?
Each woman who enters the centre plays a vital role in its success, whether through the shared moments of connection in the front room or by contributing her energy to the growth of these essential spaces.
The centre, in turn, becomes not just a physical space, but a community—a place where liberty is not just a concept, but a reality for all who enter.
It’s a place where the freedom to grow, heal, and be yourself is within the brickwork.
We’re here to help you thrive
The Liberty Centre is built on the ideas of shared communities - where every woman’s presence, participation, and energy contribute to the collective strength of the space. It’s a place where women not only come together to relax and recharge but also to support one another in meaningful ways. The heart of the centre is a communal area—our "front room"—where warmth, creativity, and connection thrive. It’s an inviting environment where conversations flow, acts of kindness are exchanged, and friendships blossom.
This central space fuels the entire centre, inspiring a ripple effect that allow the journeys within other rooms to flourish. These rooms, each with their own story and purpose - are influenced by collaboration and mutual support. They provide opportunities for women escaping abuse, isolated women to build new skills and create new friendship, and accessible pathways to security and empowerment.

Creating a Place of Community for Women in Exeter
What women have told us they want from a Women’s Centre
Shirley L.
“I don’t believe there’s enough safe space for women in Exeter... I don’t believe there’s enough safe space in this city for women where they’re not surrounded by men. When things are very, very difficult for women, what they’re going through is very difficult, whether that’s domestic violence, abuse or assault, there is nowhere where they can go that’s just all women centred, that feels safe. I don’t believe we have that in the city of Exeter.”
Molly S.
“It’s for us, but I’m also saying it is for mothers and children. You need an area for children as well. Like a play area for them. Mum can bring their child in and she’s stressed but they can go and play. They don’t need to know [she’s stressed].”
Maddie
“A trauma-informed therapeutic space where women could safely come and get a multi-agency holistic response to their needs, where there was benefit, housing, legal advice including for those trying to address seeing their children, where there was practical support including nurses, peer mentoring, all of the things that we know women benefit from. Even better, like the Sunflower Centre in Plymouth, some accommodation associated with what they’re offer as well, which would be amazing.”
